Neck Pain in Los Angeles
7/26/20
If you’re reading this because you’re having neck pain right now, you know that it can vary from just a mild muscular ache to severe pain that can interfere with your activities and your quality of life. While the pain may start out as a mild and aching pain and stiffness in the neck and upper back, if left untreated, it can and will likely increase over time. Typically, if you have repeated episodes of neck pain, continuing to ignore it or simply using anti-inflammatory medications to decrease the pain in the short-term, you may be setting yourself up for more significant problems in the future.

In over 30 years of practice, I’ve seen so many patients ignore their problems for months and years at a time, but these same people would never ignore a red warning light being on in their car. Why would anyone take better care of their car and get that fixed and ignore their own bodies - which are by themselves – the vehicles for your own nervous system and life.

WHAT IS MY NECK MADE OF?

Your neck actually consists of 7 small vertebrae between the top of your chest to just below your skull. Those 7 vertebrae allow your head to move in multiple directions. Therefore, when people talk about neck pain, it can also be related to the neck just under the base of the skull but also include the top of the shoulders and upper back. Due to the high degree of flexibility, your neck is also particularly vulnerable to injury. Neck pain is particularly common problem in our modern world and is usually the second most common condition that brings people to a chiropractor. The most common causes of neck pain include poor spinal motion and function that lead to generalized wear and tear of the vertebrae, joints and discs resulting in pressure on the nerves leaving the neck producing radiating pain to the shoulders and, arms wrists and hands. There are also single and repetitive injuries to the neck including whiplash, poor posture and postural changes including poor ergonomics. Ultimately, all of these lead to weak muscles and generalized wear and tear of the vertebrae, joints and discs.

Having neck pain also increases muscular tension primarily at the base of the skull leading to muscle tightness, spasms and tension headaches. Tension headaches account for as miuch as 90% of all headaches.

Is Chiropractic Care the Best for Lower Back Pain
7/26/20
Lower back pain is a very common problem. Statistics generally estimate that 90% of Americans will suffer from lower back pain at some time in their lives. Low back pain can range from mild pain to extremely debilitating pain levels and lower back pain is one of the most common reasons patients come to our office for help. Dr. Becker is conveniently located in Los Angeles and provides chiropractic care that strives to improve spinal motion and function. Clinically, Dr. Becker has found that spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments combined with a slight increase in normal exercise has helped many patients experiencing low back pain. People who have had multiple episodes of lower back pain will often find that maintaining good spinal function and a regular exercise program after that, has helped to reduce the prevalence of low back pain episodes in the future.

What your lower back is made of

The lower back is the area of the spine between the bottom of your ribs and the top of your pelvis. There are 5 movable lumbar vertebrae with discs in between them which are surrounded by strong supporting muscles and ligaments with the spinal nerves existing between each set of vertebrae. The pelvis articulates with the spine and provides additional stability and support for the spine. All of these structures combine to make your body into a strong but moveable and flexible structure, allowing you to move while protecting the spinal cord and nerves.

What causes lower back pain

Lower back pain is sometimes caused by abnormal spinal motion, fixation or damage such as muscle strains, joint sprains or degeneration. The symptoms often start off as a dull ache and can progress over time to a sharp, severe and constant low back pain. If the nerves leaving the spine are affected it can cause pain into the legs known as sciatica. The problem with the lower back is that your pain may feel the same regardless of what the cause is. That is why getting an accurate diagnosis is an important step to getting on the road to recovery. Lower back pain also tends to be aggravated by other lifestyle factors including poor posture, a lack of appropriate exercise, injuries, and poor ergonomics at home and work.
One of the most common causes of lower back pain is putting unnecessary strain on your back by activities such as improper lifting or very heavy lifting. This can damage the vertebrae and discs and lead to swelling and inflammation of the disc, joints and muscles. Indeed strains to the lower back and disc injuries are two of the most common causes of low back pain that Dr. Becker treats in Los Angeles. There are many other causes of lower back pain including herniated discs, disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome and sacroiliac joint pain (sacroiliitis).

Sciatica Specialist Los Angeles
7/26/20
If you suffer from sciatica it most likely started from a functional or mechanical problem in your spine. So the aim of any treatment should first be to restore or improve any incorrect or incomplete mobility or function and help reduce any secondary inflammation in the area and reduce any irritation of the nerves. Many people who experience sciatica can get better within a few weeks or months using a functional or mobility approach to treatment without the need for surgery.
Dr. Becker is a Chiropractor in Los Angeles and strives to eliminate the cause of sciatica and restore normal spinal motion and function to your spine, strengthen the surrounding muscles and balance the neurological control of the region. This is achieved by using specific spinal motion techniques and specific adjustments and rehabilitation exercises.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The healing process can take time and varies from person to person, often depending on the severity of your sciatica and the history of your complaint. However, in practice, Dr. Becker generally finds that most patients with sciatica get relatively immediate relief after their first chiropractic treatment. At the same time, it would also be helpful to reduce any aggravation or irritation by avoiding any prolonged activities including bending, lifting and prolonged sitting or walking. Proper and limited exercises and rest also tend to help. How active and compliant you are in your own treatment will obviously also influence your recovery time. If you are experiencing sciatic pain, it is important to achieve an accurate diagnosis prior to commencing any treatment. This is achieved through a thorough examination that allows your chiropractor to find the cause of your sciatica and recommend the best treatment for you.

NOT QUITE THE RIGHT DIRECTION / PAIN MEDICATIONS

Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or stronger prescription medications are often used to help reduce the inflammation that is associated with the irritation of the sciatic nerve. While these drugs do not treat the spine or the movement or functioning of the spine, they can be somewhat effective at reducing or relieving sciatica pain in the short-term. When combined with effective treatments like spinal manipulation that aim to remove the cause, they can help provide some management of sciatic pain. Muscle relaxants or narcotic medications may also be prescribed for the short term (a few days and up to 2 weeks) to help control the symptoms while the cause of the problem is removed but surgery should be considered only as a last resort. If Dr. Becker has any doubts about the cause of your problems or whether he can help you, he will refer you to your doctor or a spinal surgeon for another opinion.
