The Alkaline Cure: Lose Weight, Gain Energy

Many of us feel sluggish and bloated because our body is too acidic. Does it seem impossible to lose some extra pounds? Do you wish you had more energy? “Your body does not want extremes--it wants balance,” says Stephen Domenig, M.D., author of The Alkaline Cure: Lose Weight, Gain Energy and Feel Young. Most people bodies are too acidic, and rebalancing with alkaline food can restore health, revitalize energy, and trigger weight loss of about a pound per day, and sometimes more.
The principal of alkaline eating have a strong basis in science, having been developed at the famed F.X. Mayr Health Center in Dellach, Austria. Dr. Domenig, the center’s medical director, has found that 80 % of women and many men, suffer from a systemic type of acid imbalance.
When your system is too acidic, your body refuses to shed fat, and it puts out minerals from bones to neutralize acidity ( which contributes to osteoporosis). A recent study at the University of Texas found that people with a healthy pH have a body mass index ( BMI) that is 54% lower than those with a very acidic pH. Other symptoms include: fatigue, mental fogginess, constipation, gas, dry skin, gum disease, tooth decay, bad breath, frequent colds and flu, muscle aches, joint pain and stiffness.
Acidity speeds aging by disrupting cell function. It prevents toxins from being eliminated and predisposes your body to development of allergies, and cardiovascular disease.
Alkaline Diet Basics

The alkaline cure is designed to help pull your body out of its acidic state by balancing your acid/ alkaline intake. What that means in practice may surprise you. Problem food not necessarily taste acidic, but they are acid forming as soon you eat them. For example, lemons and limes despite their tartness create alkaline effect in the body, as do many fruits and vegetables.
Coffee and alcohol are very acid –forming. You can replace coffee with herbal tea or use water with lemon, cold or hot. Keep meat portions to 3 ounces, or palm size piece, because it is top acid forming food. Eat a lot of fish, in 3 ounces portions with vegetables.
Eat a lot of vegetables, after 4:00pm eat them cooked for better digestion. Top alkalizing vegetables and fruits are: potatoes, sweet potatoes, Brussel sprouts, spinach, kale, cucumber, cabbage, broccoli, leafy salad greens, beets, apples, almonds, carrots, beans, cantaloupe, garlic, grapefruit, lentils, kelp, leak, onion, oranges, pineapple, watermelon, papaya, mango, bananas.

Top alkalizing grains are: buckwheat, rye and quinoa. All refined grains are out of the menu, especially wheat and gluten containing.
Top alkalizing fats are: flax seed oil, butter, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and cold pressed nut and seed oils such grape seed oil, avocado oil. Refined oils are acidic, and deep frying will make any foods even vegetables, highly acidic.
Unflavored yogurt with live cultures is alkaline, unaged cheeses are the best, aged cheeses are acidic.
All fresh herbs are alkaline: cilantro, parsley, peppermint, thyme, rosemary, ginger, garlic, basil, dill.
You can reverse aging making life style changes and incorporating alkaline diet in your everyday life. Even with a relatively healthy diet, our body become more acidic as we age. Acidity speeds up the natural process of muscle wasting, making us more prone to future injury.
The alkaline cure includes more than just eating the right food, getting plenty of sleep, and 30 min of daily low impact exercises is very important. Another thing: forget about snacks. Eating three regular meals and skipping snacks gives your stomach time to properly digest every batch of food, assimilation of nutrients will be better.
After dinner, avoiding snacks prevents the digestive system from working overtime, and that can help you sleep better.
If you follow the guidelines above, there is no need to count calories, says Dr. Domenig.
